Science and Primary UPD8 are 2 Web sites specifically designed to make science relevant using the power of topicality. They create a bridge between science stories in the news and the national curriculum with punchy activities that deliver content with maximum engagement.
Developed by the Association of Science Education (ASE) and the Centre for Science Education (Sheffield Hallam University) the projects and sites aim to provide teachers with weekly, easy-to-use resources for class activities and lesson plans

Project overview
Because the project was based around making current topics in the news engage with the national curriculum, speed was a vital factor. It was important the Web sites were both engaging and easy to use for their target audience – teachers, as well as being easy to update for the administrators.
Interactive Web Solutions were approached and asked to design and develop the new sites. We developed both sites in PHP and MySQL to provide:
- Static content
- Easy-to-use content management sections for lessons, categories and news
- Online review and rating capability for users
- User sign-up and management features
- Automated newsletter functionality
- Subscriptions
Both sites now contain an increasing number of resources and are being well utilised by teachers across the UK.
