Primary UPD8's philosophy of science education is simple: put engagement first. But it’s easier said than done. Pupils begin to switch off science from year 5 and 6, according to research. We shouldn’t be surprised. Wonder and excitement are fragile enough to be squashed under the weight of content and assessment.
Primary UPD8 makes science relevant using the power of topicality. Every week interesting science pops out of the news and popular culture. They create the bridge to the curriculum, with punchy activities that deliver content with maximum engagement. Instead of just teaching about food chains, why not have pupils investigating recent news headlines of ‘shark attacks on the increase’?
Project overview
Interactive Web Solutions were approached and asked to design and develop the new sites. We developed both sites in PHP and MySQL to provide:
- Static content
- Easy-to-use content management sections for lessons, categories and news
- Online review and rating capability for users
- User sign-up and management features
- Automated newsletter functionality
- Subscriptions
