CCLRC
The Council for the Central Laboratory of Research Councils (CCLRC) is one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations supporting scientists and engineers world-wide.
It operates world-class, large-scale research facilities, provides strategic advice to the government on their development and manages international research projects in support of a broad cross-section of the UK research community.
CCLRC’s Science and Society programme aims to inform and enthuse young people and the public about current and future science and engineering. Although CCLRC’s main laboratory sites at Daresbury in Cheshire and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire run local and regional visits and events for schools it is difficult to engage with a national and international schools audience.
Project overview
Taking advice from education experts, CCLRC decided to produce a resource to support teaching and learning at KS3 and approached Interactive Web Solutions to help produce the ‘seeingscience with CCLRC’ CD-ROM. This has lessons, investigations and a wide range of resources based on the science undertaken at CCLRC’s laboratories, presented under the headings of Life, Materials, Environment, Space, Light and Food.
We took the collection of lesson plans, teacher notes, background notes, images, videos and an audio clip and turned them into a very teacher-friendly CD-ROM, capable of working on a wide range of computer hardware and software. Our creative input included an engaging and educational game called ‘Outbreak’ in which the pupils have to diagnose diseases from the symptoms, assign treatments and identify the source of infections. This has to be done within a set budget and a set timescale before the population of the Village all die from disease and pestilence.
Developed in HTML with intensive Flash games, this bespoke application was designed in a non-linear format to provide a realistic environment in which the pupils could learn the consequences of their decisions.
The resulting CD-ROM has been distributed free of charge on request to teachers across the world who have found it to be an excellent resource. 11 000 copies have so far been distributed.
What the client had to say
Janet Haylett, Education Liaison Officer at CCLRC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory commented:
“This resource has helped teachers bring current UK scientific research into the classroom in a colourful and engaging way. ‘Outbreak’ has proved especially popular but the feedback has shown that all sections of the CD-ROM are appreciated and used. It has been very successful with IWeb’s experience proving valuable in pulling the project together.”
