West Midlands Police
West Midlands Police (WMP) is the second largest police force in the country, covering an area of 348 sq miles and serving a population of almost 2.63 million.
The region sits at the very heart of the UK and covers the three major cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. It also includes the four metropolitan districts of Sandwell, Walsall, Solihull and Dudley.
The force is made up of 8,385 police officers, supported by 4,033 police staff, 1,066 special constables and 262 police community support officers. It is divided into 21 operational command units which split into a number of sectors. These sectors are responsible for local policing in the community.
Project overview
Being such a large and diverse organisation, WMP had built up a number of Web sites to provide information on various schemes and initiatives to both staff and the general public. These micro-sites were all linked to the main site. However, the number of sites and the work involved had brought about a situation where the main site lagged behind a number of the micro-sites with regard to look and feel.
WMP approached Interactive Web Solutions with a brief to bring the main Web site up to date. We came up with a number of alternatives for the client to choose from and then applied the new design to the existing site.
Developed in ASP, HTML and JavaScript the templates were applied to:
- Approx 700 pages of static information
- 300 pages of content managed information
In addition the new design brought the site up to date with regard to accessibility features and requirements.
