The Association for Science Education
The Association for Science Education is an independent registered charity. The Association offers support, advice, information, and free publications to all its members, which include teachers, advisers, technicians, industrialists and all contributing to the development of science education in the UK. ASE is frequently and regularly consulted by government, industry, and Local Education Authorities.
Science Year was a calendar of events, projects and resources designed to stimulate the imagination about science and technology. As its contribution to Science Year the Association for Science Education’s Science Year produced a series of CD ROM resource packages, aiming to enthuse and excite young people, whilst supporting their learning about science.
Project overview
Working with a large number of teachers and writers, the ASE developed a range of materials, from simple practicals to innovative interactive games, for teachers and their students. What was required was an easy-to-use media that would ensure all this information could be packaged into a format for easy distribution to schools across the UK.
Interactive Web Solutions were approached to develop 6 CD-ROMs, each encompassing different aspects of science, and utilising the ASE resources to their maximum effect. These resources included:
- Human Torch – an interactive game incorporating practical and research techniques, solving a mystery by experiment
- Graph Shots: dribble, pass, and shoot your way to graphical understanding
- Music: liven up revision with a musical presentation
- Good to Eat: balance the diet of a top class footballer
- Chemwars: let battle commence! An animated look at displacement reactions.
- Top Science: based on the card game “Top Trumps”, a series of resources to help students develop background knowledge
Developed in Flash MX, each CD-ROM provides teacher guidance as well as combining computer-based activities with video and interactive experiments in an engaging and easy-to-use format.
What the client had to say
Jenifer Burden commented;
"iWeb were asked to develop a series of CD ROMs as a vehicle for delivery of teaching resources to schools. This included the direct production of several interactive animations, simulations, and multimedia games, as well as the navigational architecture and physical production of the CD ROMs.
Thus the project encompassed many different areas of expertise, and we were fortunate enough to find in IWeb a company which was able to advise and manage the whole project, from conception to delivery. Two of the most reassuring aspects of working with IWeb are firstly their ability to communicate clearly the technical options available, outlining clearly pros and cons of each as a basis for their recommendations, and secondly their positive approach to finding solutions when we wanted to encompass a particular idea into the brief.
In addition, during the eighteen month project they were constantly reliable in terms both quality and delivery promises, thus enabling the project as a whole run to time and budget."
