“Map My Summer” with YouTube

February 28, 2011 |

Picture 1

YouTube Map My Summer [youtube.com] is a new YouTube experiment that tries to provide a more meaningful interface to recently submitted Australian videos. In the end, the project should create a compelling archive of the events, experiences and people from all around Australia during summer (remember, it is summer now down under).

In essence, the project tries to filter the related metadata according to the categories Activity, People or Place, while it maps all the videos on a (unfortunately invisible…) map of Australia. As a result, people can discover those specific videos that take place on a beach, show extraterrestrials, or somehow relate to a wedding. In addition, statistical data about the submitted movies according to their geographical location can be discovered through interactive donut graphs that are colored according to the three categories.

Painting with Light to Show Wi-Fi Signals

February 28, 2011 |

Light painting

WiFi is everywhere, floating and whirling around us somehow, but where is it really? In Immaterials: Light painting WiFi, Timo Arnall, Jørn Knutsen and Einar Sneve Martinussenuse a rod of blinking lights to visualize signal strength in their college town.

In order to study the spatial and material qualities of wireless networks, we built a WiFi measuring rod that visualises WiFi signal strength as a bar of lights. When moved through space the rod displays changes in the WiFi signal. Long-exposure photographs of the moving rod reveal cross sections of a network’s signal strength.

The stronger the signal strength, the more lights that illuminate in that specific spot, updating as the walker/carrier moves. Then using long-exposure photographs, the lights are recorded for beautiful results. Super simple concept, yet very effective. See the device in action in the video below.

CECILE IN 1987 & 2010, France

I think we all have that certain moments in our life when time stands still.  If just for a second, we could bet our lives on that time halted just because of a picture taken of us.  If not for the aging, it was certainly that moment that defined our entire future.  It’s that very personality that our lives would ...
